Muscle strain is defined as the tearing of muscles or tendon. This is commonly called as strains or ""pulled"" muscles.
Signs and symptoms of strains include:
• Pain on the area
• Swelling
• Stiffness
• Bruising
• If it’s a severe case, the muscle or tendon is being torn apart, there is a sign of bleeding, and the muscle may not function at all.
Common causes of Strain include:
• Sudden contraction of the muscle
• Slip on an ice
• Run, jump, throw
• Lift heavy objects
• Lifting in an awkward position
• Prolonged or repetitive movement (for chronic conditions)
You may be prone to have strain due to the following factors:
• Poor conditioning- results to have weaker muscles that is more prone to get injured
• Poor technique- wrong positioning when performing activities may lead to muscle strain
• Fatigue- low strength of muscle will result to poor support of your joints that may lead to stress muscles due to some external forces
• Wrong warm-up- having a good warm up will prevent you from having injuries from a vigorous activities
Treatment for this condition includes:
Mild to moderate injuries
• Over the counter pain reliever
• Rest
• Ice application
• Compression
• Elevation
Severe injuries
• Used of brace or splint for immobilization
• Surgery (if torn or ruptured tendon or muscle is present)
