Beauty: Tips for getting a facial

Susan Perry administers a tri-peptide facial. This anti-aging facial lasts 90 minutes and costs $130.00, and includes a bottle of botanical bio- peptide concentrate to take home.

Skin care specialists say pricey facial treatments can shave years from your face and restore luster to your skin. Facials are also a fun indulgence. “It’s about teaching yourself to relax and receive,” said Susan Perry, owner of Susan Perry Skin Care/Day Spa in Plymouth.

The process lasts an hour to 90 minutes. After analyzing what kind of treatment is appropriate for a person’s skin type, a skin care specialist goes through a series of steps that clean, exfoliate and rehydrate the skin. At the end of the process, a mask is usually applied to the client’s face. For oily skin, salons use a clay mask, and for dry skin a cream or gel mask is used. Popular ingredients in masks include honey, mulberry root and seaweed. The process costs $65 to $150.

That’s expensive, but beauty experts suggest that by warding off wrinkles and crow’s feet, clients are gaining a competitive advantage at their jobs.

“Age discrimination is out there,” Perry said. “You want to look fresh and young in the workplace.”

To keep skin feeling healthy, salon owners urge clients to buy home care products. They suggest buying a moisturizer and exfoliating creams or lotions from companies such as Repechage and Jan Marini. These can cost $20 to $70 a product, but are heavily concentrated and last for months.

One pervasive misconception is that having a facial will make a person break out. Most spa owners admit that in the days immediately following treatment there can be redness as oil trapped in pores comes to the surface, but they say that’s temporary.

“I tell clients, ‘Give it a week and see what the skin does,’” said Julie Mahoney, owner of Oasis Day Spa in Weymouth.

Even though facials are more popular with women, salons report an influx of male clients.

“They could use it,” said Nicole Scichilone, a skin care specialist at Verona Salon in Plymouth. “Most men I know don’t use sunscreen, so their pores are clogged.”
