Chickenpox is a highly infectious viral illness, most common in children, that causes an intensely itchy rash of blisters. Your child may generally feel unwell, with a headache and mild fever, just before the rash develops and for the first few days afterwards. The first symptoms appear 10-21 days after contact with the infection, and most children are completely recovered 7-10 days later.

NATURAL REMEDIES

A Stroke of Inspiration

One bleak, typically New England winter day in 1996, Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D., a thirty-seven-year-old Harvard brain scientist and the star of the aforementioned video, woke up with a throbbing headache. Thinking that exercise would help alleviate the pain, she hopped onto her cardio glider. When that offered no relief she got into the shower. Stepping under what seemed to be a torrent of water, her sensory perception changed. She was struck by a sense of awe as the physical border of her body seemed to melt into her surroundings.

“What a bizarre living being I am. Life! I am life! I am a sea of water bound inside this membranous pouch”.

She was having a stroke.

Strangely, she didn’t panic.

“How often does a brain scientist get to study her own brain from the inside out?” she asks in her now-famous lecture taped at the 2008 TED conference in California.

As she was “enfolded by a blanket of tranquil euiphoria”, the left side of her brain, the control center of logic, order, language, and “that constant chatter that had attached me to the details of my life”, began shutting down. Until that December day in 1996, she had been a work-focused, type-A scientists who spent a lifetime living in thoughts. But now, with the left side of her brain temporarily disabled, she awoke to the peace and grace and energy that reside in the right side of her brain. And her life was profoundly changed.

When you listen to Bolte Taylor speak, which I really hope you will do, you will be struck immediately by her sense of boundless energy. (You may also be struck by her almost spiritual sense of grace and wisdom and joy, but for now, let’s just focus on the energy part). Her message is clear: If you want that energy, and all the other wondrous feelings that go with it, you simply have to do more to exercise that often quiet right brain of yours.

HOW TO AWAKEN CREATIVE ENERGY
The good news is that you don’t have to actually go out and have a stroke to tap into the right side of your brain. You just have to work at quieting the left half, where past experiences and future worries can create the negative, judgmental voices that weigh us down, tire our spirit, and limit our potential. Once you learn to access the right hemisphere of your brain – crayons, anyone? – you can awaken creative energy and experience a deep sense of inner peace.

The right side of the brain is the part that lives only in the now. It’s not tired. It’s not fatigued. It’s not exhausted. It’s just in the now*. And one way to tap into the power of now is to reach back to your grade school days. Which brings me back to the crayons.

Pick up a pack of crayons and color your world periwinkle blue, pine green, or scarlet red. Don’t judge. Don’t analyze. Suspend logic. Let go. Vary the strokes and shades; let your imagination get carried away in Crayola. One you let your left brain nap, you can awaken the artist within. You may want to shift from crayons to charcoal or paint, or maybe your artistic medium is clay or straw. It doesn’t’ matter. By merely making an effort to quiet those limiting, negative inner voices and listening to your creative instinct, you can shift into a really positive energy zone.

The more you practice, the easier it will be to overcome stress, unlock your creative power, and live in the here and now.
Do that, and I guarantee you’ll feel energized.

Psoriasis
In psoriasis, patches of red, thickened skin with silvery scales develop, usually on your elbows, knees, scalp, and trunk. These areas can be itchy and painful. Your nails may become rough and pitted, and, less commonly, a form of arthritis develops. Psoriasis can be a persistent problem, and tends to run in families. Stress, infections such as a sore throat, and skin injuries may trigger an attack or make it worse.

Make an appointment to see your doctor if you think that you have psoriasis.

NATURAL REMEDIES
Oatmeal bath oils help to soften scaly plaques and relieve itching. Aloe vera creams and gels may help to reduce dryness and itching in psoriasis. There is some evidence for their effectiveness but ask your doctor for advice before using them.

What you can do yourself
The following measures may be all you need to treat a mild case of psoriasis. Check with your doctor before using them with prescribed treatment.

Effective Remedies for Hay Fever

Hay fever
Hay fever is caused by an allergy to pollen or mould. When pollen grains or mould spores get into your eyes, nose, or airways, they cause symptoms such as sneezing; a runny or blocked nose; itching in your eyes, nose, and the roof of your mouth; watery, red eyes; and a cough. You may also develop wheezing. Symptoms can develop at any time from early spring to early autumn, depending on which pollens or moulds trigger the allergy. Hay fever tends to run in families that have a high incidence of allergic conditions such as asthma and eczema, but many people seem to grow out of the problem as they get older.

What you can do yourself
Most people are able to control their symptoms using over-the-counter remedies. Try the following to see what works best for you.

* Take an antihistamine to relieve most hay fever symptoms (See DRUG REMEDIES).

A steroid nasal spray is particularly effective in helping to prevent or relieve sneezing, watering, itching, and stuffiness in your nose (see DRUG REMEDIES). You can use the spray either alone or with an antihistamine.

* Sodium cromoglicate nasal spray (see DRUG REMEDIES) can be used as an alternative to a steroid nasal spray for mild symptoms.

* For itchy eyes, use sodium cromoglicate or antihistamine eye drops ( see DRUG REMEDIES).

* Decongestant drugs can be used in the short term to clear a blocked nose (see DRUG REMEDIES). They can also be used to help clear your nose when starting a course of a steroid nasal spray.

* Avoid substances that can further irritate your nose and eyes, such as tobacco smoke or dust, perfumes, or strong-smelling chemicals.

* When the pollen count is high (usually on hot, dry, windy days at mid-morning and early evening), stay indoors as much as possible, keeping windows and doors close. In a car, keep windows and air vents closed. Some newer cars have pollen filters.

* Dry clothes inside if possible. If you do dry washing outside, bring it in before the evening.

* Have a shower and wash your hair before bed to remove pollen that has built up during the day.

Seek medical advice if:
* There is no improvement after you have been using home treatments for 2-3 weeks

DRUG REMEDIES
Antihistamine tablets are a convenient treatment that can be used on a one-off basis or regularly, and with nose sprays or eye drops (if these treatments don’t ease symptoms by themselves). They quickly relieve most hay fever symptoms, including sneezing, although they are not as effective as steroids for a blocked nose.

Steroid nasal sprays relieve nasal symptoms more effectively than antihistamines. They can take several days to reach their full effect, so try to start the treatment before the hay fever season begins, and use the spray daily.

Sodium cromoglicate nasal spray can be used as an alternative to a steroid nasal spray, although it is not generally as effective. It also needs to be used continuously.

Eye drops containing sodium cromoglicate or antihistamine can prevent or relieve symptoms. Sodium cromoglicate eye drops can take a few days to have a noticeable effect, and they must be used continuously.

Decongestants, available as nasal sprays or drops, act quickly. They are good for occasional use. Do not use them for more than 7 days, however, or they may make you feel more blocked up when you stop.

You may then notice little bumps and tiny, pencil-like lines (burrows); these usually develop between the fingers and toes and on the elbows and wrists, but may occur anywhere on your skin. Scabies is troublesome rather than serious. Anyone can catch it, regardless of age and personal hygiene, through any type of skin-to-skin contact or simply by sharing bedding, towels, or clothing.

See your doctor first
* You are not sure that you have scabies

* You are pregnant or breastfeeding

* A baby under 6 months has scabies

* Use a cream or lotion for treating scabies (see DRUG REMEDIES, below).

* You can relieve itching with a skin cream or lotion and/or take an antihistamine if itching is making it difficult for you to sleep (see DRUG REMEDIES, below).

* Make sure other people in the home and close friends are treated, even if they are not showing signs of scabies, because they can have the infestation without symptoms.

* Scabies mites can live for 1-2 days in clothes and bedding. To kill the mites, wash clothes, bed linen, and towels in hot water and dry in a tumble dryer if possible. Wash personal items such as hairbrushes as well. Items that cannot be washed easily can be placed in a sealed plastic bag for at least 72 hours, which will kill the mites.

DRUG REMEDIES
Scabies lotions (see p 188) usually contain the insecticide substances malathion or premethrin. Ask your pharmacist to suggest a suitable preparation. Apply the treatment to your entire body, including your scalp, face, ears, and neck. Trim your nails short and apply it underneath your nail tips. Permethrin preparations should be left on for 8-12 hours and malathion preparations for 24 hours before washing off. A second application a week later is recommended.

Antihistamines can help to relieve itching. Sedative types make you drowsy, so are particularly useful at night.

Creams Crotamiton cream or calamine lotion help to relieve itching.

Relieving itching
Itching can persist for several weeks after the infestation has cleared, so you may need to continue using anti-itching cream.

Natural remedies for runny nose

blocked or runny nose
How to treat blocked or runny nose naturally

If you have a runny or blocked nose, you feel stuffed up, may lose your sense of taste and smell, and may only be able to breathe through your mouth. You may cough at night because of mucus dripping down the back of your throat. If your “bungee up” nose is due to a cold or sinus infection, you may also have a thick yellowish-green discharge from your nose. A blocked or runny nose can also be caused by allergies to substances such as pollen, house dust mites, pet dander (flakes of skin), and mould. Symptoms can occur at any time or be seasonal, as with hay fever.

NATURAL REMEDIES
Aromatic oils such as menthol, eucalyptus, or camphor, are traditional treatments for a blocked nose. Try sucking lozenges containing menthe, or putting a few drops of an aromatic oil on a tissue and inhaling it. Use a menthol chest rub at night if you are having difficulty sleeping.

What you can do yourself
Try the following home treatments to help relieve your blocked or runny nose.

* Drink at least 8 glasses a day of clear fluids such as water, fruit juice, herbal teas, and clear soups. Hot drinks will help to loosen mucus if your nose is blocked. Using saline nose drops has a similar effect .

* Try a steam inhalation, or run hot water into the bath or shower and inhale the steam

* Remedies containing aromatic oils may help to relieve a stuffy nose

* If you have a blocked nose due to a cold, try a decongestant nasal spray

* If your nose is sore from blowing it, apply some petroleum jelly around your nostrils to protect them.

* To treat a blocked or runny nose caused by an allergy, use a steroid nasal spray and/or an oral antihistamine

* Avoid smoke and dust; they can irritate the lining of your nose and worsen symptoms.

DRUG REMEDIES
Saline nose drops (see p 188) can be bought from your pharmacist, or you can make your own by dissolving half a teaspoon of salt in 250 ml (half a pint) of lukewarm water. Apply them using a dropper, 2-4 times a day.

Decongestants. Available as nasal sprays or drops, quickly relieve a blocked nose by reducing swelling and congestion in the tissues lining the nose. They also lessen mucus production. They should not, however, be used for more than 7 days, otherwise they may make you feel more blocked up when you stop using them.

Steroid nasal sprays containing a corticosteroid drug are particularly effective for nasal symptoms such as a blocked nose. They can take several days to reach their full effect, so, if possible, start using them at least 2-3 days before exposure to allergic triggers.

Antihistamines, in the form of tablets or liquids, usually work within 1 hour. You can use them to relieve a runny nose due to allergy, but they are not so effective for a blocked nose. They can be taken regularly or only as needed – for example, if you are visiting a house with pets.

Arrange to see your doctor if:

* Symptoms have not begun to clear up using the measures described here

* You develop new symptoms

* You are using medications continually to relieve your blocked or runny nose.
