Go green yoga and earth-friendly solutions

With everything else going green, why not yoga , too?

Yoga teaches us to be mindful and to bring spiritual awareness into the social context. Being environmentally mindful is one way we can integrate what we learn on the mat with our life off the mat. Our yoga practice also teaches us about the intimate relationship we have with the natural world. By becoming more conscious of our impact on the earth, we can move toward living in harmony with the natural world.

With studios around the world taking a step toward green yoga, there are many alternatives to consider that can help students, teachers, and studios alike to become more sustainable.

Here are some eco-friendly solutions that some studios have adopted right in San Francisco:

Recycled and natural mats and props, such as cork blocks and sticky mats made from recycled rubber.

Natural light sources from windows and skylights, or low-watt bulbs to save energy.

Water saving fixtures in locker room, including low flow toilets, sinks and showers.

All flyers, schedules and promotional materials printed on recycled paper, or better yet, electronically.

Use of non-chemical cleaning agents for mats (tea tree oil works great), floors, and bathrooms.

Water glasses and hand towels cut back on paper waste.

Indoor plants provide clean air and a reminder of our vital planet.
