Childhood Obesity Induced Diabetes Leads To Premature Death

Adults are aware of the health risks associated with being obese and some choose to do something about it. Overweight children do not realize the consequences of an unhealthy weight and diet during their youth. Obese children are more likely to die prematurely than the children who have a healthy diet and weight.

The study began several decades ago when the Pima and Tohono O’odham Indians realized their youth had a serious problem. 4,857 children who were born between 1945 and 1984 and did not have diabetes were followed throughout the study. When the children were approximately 11 years old, they were tested to evaluate their blood pressure, cholesterol levels, glucose tolerance and BMI.

By 2003, 559 of the children had died, of which 166 died from various health issues. Adults who had the highest BMI scores as children were 2.3 times more likely to die prematurely than the children with lower BMI scores. The children with the highest glucose levels had a 73 percent greater chance of dying younger than those with healthy levels.

Researchers now believe high glucose levels or diabetes are more likely to cause premature death than any other obesity health concern. This study has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
