Michelle Obama Revals Plans To Tackle Kids Obesity

Michelle Obama who has taken to the White House like a fish to water is determined not to be a back seat First Lady and has staked her reputation on making a drastic impact on the childhood obesity problem in the United States.
Michelle Obama Says That We Can Do It Together

Michelle Obama has organised a committee with members of Congress and held her first meeting at the White House recently. She said that the good news was that the problem was one which could be solved but that it would require a lot of different people to come together and work together. She said that not only would government need to be involved but everybody including parents and teachers would have to have a stake in the initiative.

She stressed the need for a bipartisan effort and outlined four key areas in which they would be focusing on. Firstly schools needed not only to teach healthy nutrition but also provide it in school canteens. She said that all schools must serve healthy food every day. The second initiative would be to increase the amount of exercise and physical activity not only at schools but in the general daily life of children.

The third initiative and one which we believe at Ukmedix News to be essential for the success of this plan would be to make sure that healthy food was easily accessible to children. This means that the government must intervene to make sure that if children want to eat fruits and veggies that it is easy for them to get it everywhere. The last initiative would be to focus on educating consumers to choose food wisely. Despite most people being aware of what food is good for them and what is not there are millions of uneducated people who really are unaware of what they should be eating in order to get healthy.

At Ukmedix News we wish Michelle Obama the best of luck but at the same time we are skeptical of any serious change unless fast food restaurants are regulated, food producers are given strict limits on to whom they are allowed to advertise and that legislation is brought into place to protect children from predatory companies who make it almost impossible for them to learn healthy eating habits.

A simple bit of legislation which would have a drastic affect on children’s eating habits would be to ban advertising of food which was directed at children. This means no more Ronald McDonald and sponsorship of Disney movies and cartoons by fast food companies. Eating habits are formed at a very young age and are extremely difficult to break as children get older. Allowing fast food adverts to target these young children has been described by some campaigners as criminal.
