Effect of swimming pool chlorine on health

Swimming is a good way of exercise. Irritation can happen on the skin and scalp, making for a dry, itchy body and head if the pool in the water contains chlorine. Additionally, the Pacific Center for Health says that chlorine can also wipe out much-needed proteins in our bodies. Depleted of protein, skin and hair may become very dry. Hair can become uncontrollable and color-treated hair can be ruined.

Chlorine in swimming pools reacts with organic matter such as sweat, urine, blood, feces, and mucus and skin cells to form more chloramines. Chloroform risk can be 70 to 240 times higher in the air over indoor pools than over outdoor pools.

While swimming in a chlorinated pool can heighten the chances of these affects, showering with a filter that take away the chemical can greatly lower the effects of it. (This type of filter also helps in universal for households who also may have chlorine.) Also, wetting the hair with non-chlorinated water before swimming will lessen that amount of the element that can be absorbed.
