Antioxidants protects various health conditions including diabetes

Antioxidants, long believed to protect individuals against various health conditions, increases the pace of the disease in type 2 diabetics, a new study finds.

Antioxidants commonly found in fruits and vegetables, such as blueberries and broccoli, had long been believed to fight several diseases including type 2 diabetes, through preventing the cell damage caused by oxidative stress.

According to the study published in Cell Metabolism, taking antioxidants at early stages of type 2 diabetes aggravates the condition.

While oxidation body is troublesome in advanced stages of diabetes, small amounts of reactive oxygen species play an important role in early stages of the disease, indicating that taking antioxidant supplements can lead to the condition in those prone to diabetes.

"If you've been told you are developing insulin resistance, you're at the early stages of Type 2 diabetes, then antioxidants, we suggest - but I'll stress all the work we've done is in mice - that antioxidants would be bad for you in that context," said lead researcher, Tony Tiganis.

Scientists, therefore, urge healthy individuals to adopt a healthy diet and exercise rather than taking antioxidants supplements.
