President Barack Obama has quit smoking and is in excellent health, the results of his second medical tests since taking office show.
In a two-page report released by the White House, Dr Jeffrey C Kuhlman said the US President eats a healthy diet, is physically active, maintains a healthy weight and occasionally drinks alcohol in moderation, reports ABC News.
50-year-old Obama appears to have taken steps to improve his health since his last physical in February 2010, which was less positive.
Dr Kuhlman warned Mr Obama then that he should continue with “smoking cessation efforts” and that his cholesterol level was “borderline high.”
But his cholesterol is now “ideal” and he appears to have quit smoking entirely, according to Kuhlman, ABC News reports.
However, some cardiologists say Obama’s cholesterol levels could be lower, despite the improvement since his last test.
Dr. Lori Mosca, director of preventive cardiology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, said, “A U.S. president should have an optimal LDL of less than 100. It’s great that he is improving with his lifestyle, especially stopping smoking,” reports ABC News.
But because the president is a former smoker, doctors say his risk of developing heart disease is higher.
The current report puts Obama’s good cholesterol, or HDL, levels at 69, a dramatic improvement over his February 2010 score of 46.
Dr Kuhlman said the president should have his next tests in December 2012, adding, “The president is fit for duty. Data indicates he will stay so for the duration of his presidency,” ABC News reports.
