Is resveratrol the key to a long. healthy life? A lot of people are wondering that today.
Three phrases that include the word resveratrol are among the 20 most-common search terms on Google this afternoon.
Resveratrol is a grape compound found in red wine and grape juice. It's seen as the key to the so-called "French Paradox" -- the fact that French people are healthy despite eating so much fatty food.
That's often attributed to the large volume of resveratrol that French people consume as part of their heavy intake of red wine.
A connection has been made between resveratrol and preventing cancer, Alzheimer's and heart disease.
Many Internet sites offer resveratrol supplements. But people are urged to be careful, as the long-term effects of resveratrol have not yet been demonstrated. Further, there are concerns about Internet scams involving resveratrol, which has received a good deal of media attention.
CBS' "60 Minutes" did a story about resveratrol earlier this year. Here is that report.
