Consume fat-free milk but in moderation for a healthy heart

With the pace of life becoming faster and stress levels increasing, both at home and workplace, more and more youngsters are contracting heart diseases. This a major reason for concern and it is now even more important for all of us to understand the risk factors and take immediate steps to lead a healthy life,” said Dr G S Kalra, Director, Cardiology, Fortis Hospital, Mohali.

Dr Kalra was addressing the management, teachers and students of DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, during a health camp organised by the Women’s Cell of DAV on the college premises. Over 100 persons attended the talk.

“Worldwide, this trend is increasing, but more so in India. There have been cases of young people as less as 24 dying because of cardiac problems,” he said. Dr Kalra explained to the audience that every pain was not always a symptom of a heart attack. He made it very clear that a heart attack often started with mild symptoms which may not be painful. Pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the centre of the chest and pain spreading to the shoulders, neck or arms sweating or shortness of breath were the common symptoms.

“Heart disease can be prevented by some lifestyle changes which include stress management, dietary management, lipid management and, of course, exercise,” he said.

He stressed on vegetarian food revealing that in the West, people were switching to a vegetarian diet to safeguard their health. He also stated that we should look for other options for protein diet like soya milk, rather than having cow or buffalo milk. If milk has to be taken, it should be fat free and that also in moderation.

Answering a question on intake of alcohol, Dr Kalra said that this should also be done in moderation if a person felt the dire need to consume alcohol.

He said stress could be reduced through meditation, medication, yoga, etc.
