Swordfish helps in treating gum disease

People who enjoy swordfish or salmon for dinner may be in luck.

A newsletter put out by a science-based website named the Fats of Life has called attention to a past study that found Omega-3 fatty acids from seafood may decrease the severity of symptoms associated with gum disease.

The idea of consuming foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids is nothing new. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people should replace eating what it calls "harmful fats" with foods that have omega-3s.

However, the best way to maintain one's dental health is to ensure conditions such as gum disease or tooth decay don't happen in the first place.

The best way to do this is through routine dental care such as brushing twice daily and flossing one's teeth. Food that gets lodged between a person's teeth can cause cavities and, if left untreated, can lead to gum disease.

Regular dental checkups are also key to make sure one's mouth is as clean and as fresh as possible.
