Low Vitamin D May Cause Vascular Problems

People deficient in vitamin D are at a greater risk of stiffer arteries and decreased relaxation of the vessels according to a new study out of Emory/Georgia Tech Predictive Health Institute.

These conditions can lead to high blood pressure which can lead to cardiovascular disease. Of the 554 overall healthy participants in the study, 14 percent were deficient in 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the form that reflects diet and the skin’s production, having less than 20 nanograms per milliliter.

Researchers measured the blood vessels’ ability to relax and enlarge so blood could flow back in and found those with a vitamin D deficiency have stiffer arteries and decreased vascular function. Increasing vitamin D via supplementation or more sunlight improved vascular health and lowered blood pressure.
