Teens' BMI 'forecasts diabetes and heart disease'

The body mass index (BMI) of young adults can forecast future conditions resulting from obesity, researchers have found.

A study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, revealed that having an elevated but normal range BMI as a young adult is linked to type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease as a young adult.

Authors say that an adolescent with a high BMI who becomes a lean adult almost eliminates the predicted risk of developing diabetes due to obesity.

"Conversely, the risk of that person for heart disease will remain elevated compared to the lean teen who became a lean adult, though still will be lower than that of the heavier teen who became an obese adult," explains researcher Dr Amir Tirosh.

Meanwhile, scientists at the National Cancer Institute have found that diabetes is linked to a lower incidence of prostate cancer in men but a higher risk of other cancers and mortality in men and women.
