Precision techniques can help cancer patients

At a time when advancements in cancer research are raising hopes of successful treatment of the fatal disease, radiation experts are pinning hopes on precision techniques that destroy the malignant (cancerous cells) while sparing the normal tissues to promote recovery from the painful condition.

As per Nagraj G Huigol, chief radiation oncologist, Nanavati Hospital, Mumbai, the precision radiation therapies are coming in a big way to the rescue of cancer patients who suffer from painful conditions beside losing some of the normal tissues while undergoing radiation therapy. "Now, intensity modulated radiation therapies (IMRT) using image guided techniques are not only controlling the intensity of radiation in affected areas but also helping in reducing the complications involved in surgical interventions for cancer patients," he informed.

Nagraj was recently in the city to throw light on recent advancement in cancer therapeutics that was part of continuous medical education (CME) programme organised in Cantonment.
