Effective home remedies for cough

One of the most common symptoms I’m seeing in my office is cough. A cough can mean several things from an infection, be it bacterial or viral, allergies, asthma or acid reflux. However, a cough is usually caused by an infection. If it lasts longer than 2 weeks and, especially if it’s getting worse, you should get in to see your doctor.

You can also try the below home remedies which are effective in eliminating cough quickly:


1. A simple home remedy is to have honey in a hot drink before bed time.

2. Turmeric powder boiled in milk and taken internally relieves cough.

3. Dry cough can be cured by gradually swallowing mixture of cumin seeds powder mixed with ghee.

4. All kinds of cough can be cured by drinking the juice of ash gourd mixed with little hot water.

5. To relieve fits of coughing due to dryness in the throat suck a few peppercorns.

6. Use an infusion of ginger trice a day.

7. Put a grain of salt into your mouth to stop a persistent cough.

8. Taking a mixture lemon juice, honey and glycerin is an effective remedy for cough.

9. Suck a whole clove without chewing it to soothe a cough.

10. Chew a few leaves of basil a betel leaf and a clove together.

11. Boil a handful tamarind leaves in water with a half teaspoon if asafetida and a
teaspoon of salt. Drink this thrice daily.

12. Cut a ripe banana into four pieces. Fry in ghee till brown. Cool and eat twice
daily.

13. Have an infusion of basil leaves daily every morning.

14. Make an infusion with fenugreek leaves ginger and honey. Drink it thrice daily.

15. Boil an onion, five basil leaves, five peppercorns and two cloves in one and
half cup of water till it is reduced to one cup. Drink it hot thrice a day.

16. Three peppercorns with a pinch of salt and black cumin can be taken for relief.

17. Mix together four teaspoons of jaggery and a teaspoon of pepper powder. Make
into small balls and suck four of these each day.

18. Apples bring great relief to a person with a dry cough.

19. Mix a tablespoon of poppy seeds with a teaspoon of honey and ten tablespoons of
coconut milk. Take every night before going to bed.

20. An infusion made with the bark of the neem is said to cure cough.
