Handy tips for staying healthy through holidays

The holiday season is upon us and with this comes cold and flu season. Cold and flu are at their worst during the winter months and can spread easily when we gather together to celebrate. The Bear River health department would like to offer a few tips to help your holidays be free from cold and flu.

The best way to stay health this holiday season is to prevent the spread of disease. The Bear River Health Department encourages everyone to:

• Wash your hands regularly with soap and warm water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol based hand sanitizer. These are great while you are out shopping. Hand washing also prevents food borne illnesses as we prepare holiday meals.

• Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing. Be sure to throw away your used tissue and to wash your hands once you are done.

• Stay home when you are sick. Although it’s fun to be a part of the festivities, it’s best to avoid contact with anyone. You don’t want to spread your illness to others. CDC recommends staying home until you have not had a fever without using fever reducing medicines for at least 24 hours.

“We want everyone to be able to enjoy a healthy happy holiday season. While practicing prevention sounds simple it is one of the best things we can do to prevent the spread of disease. “said Jescee Adams, spokeswoman for the Bear River Health Department.
