Personal safety and awareness is something that we all need to think about. Unfortunately many of us don’t consider the fact that we could be the target of an assault or violent crime until it is too late or there is a local incident that occurs and causes fear in us. The recent assault with intent to rape out on Plum Island has brought concern to all of us who reside on the North Shore.
Whether you run, bike, enjoy a quiet walk on the beach or just simply enjoy the many shops and restaurants around town. There are basic safety and awareness tips you should always follow.
Self Defense
1. Present yourself in a confident, aware manner
2. Be aware of surroundings for clues someone may be near, such as the smell of cologne or cigarettes
3. Carry a small weapon, as simple as car keys or keychains with army knife.
4. While walking alone on lonely area, keep your mind active, try to keep your presence of mind alive.
Basic safety tips
1. Always carry and present yourself in a confident and secure manner. Walk with your head up and shoulders back, eyes keen. Looking strong and alert is one of the most effective ways to eliminate yourself from the victim pool. Most attackers are looking for an easy target, not a fight.
2. Always be aware of your surroundings. Make a mental note of parked cars, people, sounds and smells. Trust your instinct and use all five senses. Take a moment when you exit a building to glance around and make note, if you smell a cigarette or cologne chances are someone is nearby.
3. When venturing off by yourself whether in a remote area of beach or parkland or an evening at the mall, you should always carry a weapon of sorts and always make note of what is around you to be used as a weapon. This can be something as simple as your car keys or using sand to temporary blind someone, allowing yourself the time you need to escape from the situation at hand and get yourself to a safe place.
Taking control of your own safety is something everyone can and should do.
