Why is child nutrition important?

To keep a child healthy, having proper nutrition is important. Parents, unfortunately are not always clear on what makes up a healthy diet. They allow their children to make their own choices that are not healthy such as drinking too much sodas. They do not get enough calcium or there’s too much calories. Due to this behavior, it contributes to the current childhood obesity epidemic.

Another reason why healthy diet is important is that it helps the child to grow and learn. This also prevents obesity and weight related diseases. Here are guidelines to help you as a parent to give your child a nutritious diet:

• You should offer a child at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
• Healthy sources of protein must be chosen such as lean meat, nuts and eggs.
• Instead of frying them, broil, grill or steam foods.
• High fiber breads such as whole grain breads and cereals must be served.
• Eating fast food and junk food must be limited.
• Water must be offered instead of drinks full of sugar such as sodas.

It is also best to learn your children’s nutrient requirement. Some requirements change like for iron and calcium as a child changes age.

Aside from diet, it must be taken into consideration the importance of physical activity that should be included in the child’s well being for proper growth and development. This will prevent the development of such diseases such as juvenile diabetes and obesity and other health diseases associated with obesity.
