Well one way of improving performance is by considering your carbohydrate intake, most especially for endurance type athletes or those who are involved in sports.
Pastas are high carbohydrate foods and "CARBOHYDRATES" is a good source of ENERGY, it is being stored in the muscles for energy.
It is good to eat pasta before or 4-6 hours before the game because we need to consider Digestion of the foods we eat before being converted to such substances to be stored in certain parts of the body. Regarding your second concern, chicken or beef are proteins..you can actually eat them but eveything should be taken moderately..in fact proteins are good as well however keep in mind that CARBOHYDRATES are stil the best source of ENERGY. It's as simple as CARBOHYDRATES=ENERGY.

1.Protein is needed in an athlete’s diet inorder to build and also maintain muscle mass,a small amount will supply.
2.Water is very important. Fluid intake for hydration should always be a routine of a football player.
3.Avoid alcohol intake, it can actually slow reaction time that may lead to dehydration, upset stomach and if consumed it can delay recovery prior to replenishing and carbo.
4.You should have at least 8-10 hours of sleep daily.
5.Maintain proper diet and exercise.
6.Avoid too much salty and fatty foods.A significant amount of fats should be considered.
Aside from all of these proper diet and exercise things to do. One of the most important thing as a football player is your MOTIVATION, DETERMINATION, and PASSION...your Victory depends on how you view things.. Be optimistic! and maintain a good relationship with the team mates to build an excellent TEAM WORK!
