FDA issues warning over dietary supplement with high lead levels

FDA found that Vita Breath had 10,000 times the maximum lead levels in candy

WASHINGTON - The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to use the dietary supplement Vita Breath.

New York City's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene found that Vita Breath contains 1,100 parts per million of lead.

That's 10,000 times higher than the maximum lead levels in candy.

The FDA warning comes after a patient with lead poisoning reported using Vita Breath with two other herbal supplements.

Vita Breath claims to promote better health for people with asthma. The product is mainly sold at health fairs and over the internet.

High levels of lead can cause damage to the brain and vital organs. The FDA says, "While People with high blood levels of lead may show no symptoms…acute lead poisoning may cause abdominal pain, muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and bloody or decreased urinary output." Children are particularly at risk.

Consumers who have used Vita Breath should contact their healthcare provider to get their lead levels tested.
