How to increase body metabolism?


Metabolism is the set of chemical reactions that occur in living organisms in order to maintain life. These processes allow organisms to grow and reproduce, maintain their structures, and respond to their environments. Metabolism is usually divided into two categories. Catabolism breaks down organic matter, for example to harvest energy in cellular respiration. Anabolism, on the other hand, uses energy to construct components of cells such as proteins and nucleic acids.

A couple of pounds can change your life.

Lifting weights can help you age more slowly and gracefully and battle osteoporosis. Weights will improve your circulation; weights can make you stronger, healthier and happier; but perhaps most surprisingly, lifting weights can and will help you reach and maintain your weight goals by increasing your metabolism.

The next time you head out for a walk around the Lake, stop off at the department store beforehand and pick yourself up a set or two of "Heavy Hand"-type weights. One set light enough to swing and pump along in your hands as you walk, another heavier set- or perhaps some light barbell weights- for some muscle- specific exercises another day.

Did you know that muscles are built by first breaking their tissue down? A body builder's bulging biceps were formed through repetitive cycles of breaking down old tissue and building new bigger and stronger muscles by working with very heavy weights. We will focus ourselves in our next column on more modest and sensible goals- stimulating muscle tissue in as many areas as possible. This will increase our metabolism as it burns calories, not just while we are exercising but also while our bodies rebuild that tissue!
