Stem cells for treatment of cerebral palsy disease holds promise

Cerebral palsy disease is a great burden for many American families. It destroys the motor control functions of the brain and may lead to severe musculoskeletal deformities and complications. Presently, there is no definite cure for cerebral palsy disease.

But researchers at Duke University in North Carolina is looking at the use of stem cell therapy for treating cerebral palsy patients. Under a pilot study, a two-year old girl suffering from the condition will get stem cells obtained from the umbilical cord of her baby brother.

During a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, doctors discovered a lack of grey matter in the baby’s brain. That may be caused by the lack of oxygen at childbirth. The introduction of stem cells is hoped to regenerate cells in that part to alleviate the severity of the symptoms of cerebral palsy disease.

Stem cell therapy can also be used for other conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease through the same mechanism. Medication with botox, speech therapy, occupational therapy and surgery are some of the other options for treating patients with cerebral palsy disease.
